THE WEATHER WE LEFT BEHIND

Saturday, January 3, 2009

300 miles yesterday and 275 today. We got to Henderson Beach State Park in Destin, FL. Very lucky to get in! But we did call 90 minutes before arrival and the kind gentleman who answered the phone said he would hold a spot for us (this is not usually done). When we got there the sign said campground was full. Really good thing we called!

This is one of, if not the cleanest, park we have ever stayed in - public or private. We spent 5 days here three years ago and have been wanting to come back. Sites are huge. Can't see any neighbors. Super clean showers - both heated and air conditioned as needed. Meticulously groomed sites. No dirt or mud. Pure white "sugar sand" beach. Fresh seafood market just down the road. And more.

Weather was cloudy the entire drive today and now, 8:00pm, it's very foggy with lightning and thunder in the background. And as I type the rain is starting to fall. First real precipitation since we left home. It actually sounds good to hear!

We will stay here tomorrow for a second night, and would stay longer if the weather was looking good, but the forecast is to get wetter and colder as the days progress. So we'll just head on West and concentrate on Mexico.

I'll take pictures of the park tomorrow.
